"Creating A Living City"
"How can an existing community with limited resources create a shared vision of a sustainable neighborhood?
Ecodistrict planning builds community capacity for the development and implementation of closed-loop systems for Energy, Water, Nutrients and Waste. In her TEDx talk, Christine Mondor outlines evolveEA’s community-based approach to designing sustainable neighborhoods, highlighting the story of two Pittsburgh communities engaged in district-scale sustainability efforts that were launched through a project called the Living Cities Masterplan" .

How Bad Are Bananas?: The carbon footprint of everything
From a text message to a war, from a Valentine's rose to a flight or even having a child, How Bad are Bananas? gives us the carbon answers we need and provides plenty of revelations. By talking through a hundred or so items, Mike Berners-Lee sets out to give us a carbon instinct for the footprint of literally anything we do, buy and think about. He helps us pick our battles by laying out the orders of magnitude. The book ranges from the everyday (foods, books, plastic bags, bikes, flights, baths...) and the global (deforestation, data centres, rice production, the World Cup, volcanoes, ...) Be warned, some of the things you thought you knew about green living may be about to be turned on their head. Never preachy but packed full of information and always entertaining.
Cradle to Cradle. Remaking the Way We Make Things
'Reduce, reuse, recycle' urge environmentalists; in other words, do more with less in order to minimize damage. But as architect William McDonough and chemist Michael Braungart point out in this provocative, visionary book, this approach only perpetuates the one-way, 'cradle to grave' manufacturing model, dating to the Industrial Revolution, that creates such fantastic amounts of waste and pollution in the first place. Why not challenge the belief that human industry must damage the natural world? In fact, why not take nature itself as our model for making things? A tree produces thousands of blossoms in order to create another tree, yet we consider its abundance not wasteful but safe, beautiful and highly effective. Waste equals food.
Guided by this principle, McDonough and Braungart explain how products can be designed from the outset so that, after their useful lives, they will provide nourishment for something new - continually circulating as pure and viable materials within a 'cradle to cradle' model. Drawing on their experience in redesigning everything from carpeting to corporate campuses, McDonough and Braungart make an exciting and viable case for putting eco-effectiveness into practice, and show how anyone involved in making anything can begin to do so as well.

Zero Carbon Food - Londres
http://www.zerocarbonfood.co.uk
"Zero Carbon Food is a commercial venture that aims to benefit Londoners, businesses, society and the environment as a whole. Utilising underground redundant spaces, we will be producing leafy greens, herbs and micro-greens. These would be grown using LED lights and a hydroponics system with all produce for sale within the M25.

Utilising underground redundant spaces, we will be producing leafy greens, herbs and micro-greens. These would be grown using LED lights and a hydroponics system with all produce for sale within the M25.
The immediate benefit for Londoners is reduced food waste through increased shelf-life, bringing employment to inner cities and helping to achieve the reduction in the carbon footprint of the capital.
The wider benefits are that our system uses 70% less water versus traditional open-field farming methods, year round production negates seasonality and therefore the necessity to import produce, drastically reducing food miles for retailers and consumers. In addition to this the crops are free from pesticides."
