French Pavilion for Milan Expo Designed to Grow Fresh Food

For the upcoming Expo Milan 2015, the country of France envisioned their pavilion as a covered market. A competition was held to design the space with the winning entry coming from X-TU architects. They centered the 3,600 square meter building around the concept of “producing and nurturing in another way,” which relates to the Expo’s tagline of “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.” We’ve previously seen that China’s pavilion for the event resembles waves of wheat. France too has an imaginative design that instead utilizes a light-weight lattice structure whose construction methods ensure that it can be disassembled and reused after the exposition.

The ground floor is a hub of activity where a range of herbs, vegetables, and hops are planted throughout the fertile marketplace; it plays on the idea of production and caring for all that pass through. Attendees can dine upstairs at a terraced restaurant that harvests and serves the pavilion's fresh produce. Additionally, there is a small boutique that offers a variety of French food, along with a demonstration zone for a hands-on approach to the country’s signature style of cooking.

The project seeks to find a solution for self-sufficiency, taking into account that there will be an estimated 9 billion people living on earth by 2050. There’s a need for additional production methods that foster better nourishment. The pavilion’s design is seen as a metaphor for a physical place where new perspectives on food and nutrition can grow and ultimately influence the world for the better.

Air, Water, Waste, Food, Energy – Designers Imagining Self-Contained Living Systems

This is Future Living

The Future Living house is a testament to the will of design. It took twenty six designers (a feat in itself) to create it. Every technologic leap was analyzed to make sure anything proposed was possible by 2050. It’s a paradigm shift in home resource creation and location. Water uses gravity to generate pressure. Energy is harvested from solar and wind apparatuses. Air, water and waste are cleaned using a living bio wall and everything is recycled when possible.

"Rolling City" Is Designed To Re-Plant The Desert

"Mounted on 16 treads originally designed to move NASA rockets, this floating, self-powered platform would roam around greening the desert--all the while supporting an entire city on board."

"Every year, more than 46,000 square miles of arable land turns to desert. As deserts spread--a process that keeps moving faster thanks to climate change and practices like clear-cutting--the UN estimates that more than 1 billion people will be directly affected. (…) Floating above the platform, giant balloons would capture water condensation. As the first treads roll over the soil, the machine uses a little water from the balloons to soften the ground. The last set of treads injects seeds, some fertilizer, and more water… Everything would run on renewable power, using a combination of solar towers, wind turbines, and a generator that creates electricity by harnessing the stark differences in temperature between day and night in the desert. The machine could theoretically capture enough energy that it can self-support an entire small city onboard. (…) The architects are currently working on developing the project on the Moroccan side of the Sahara Desert."

Plastic debris washed up on beaches gets turned into beachfront art:

"Plastic World" — made by Portuguese artists Carole Purnelle and Nuno Maya— pictured in Australia, on the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk, during the 2013 Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi exhibition. 

The spherical sculpture is 79” (200 cm) in diameter.

Projeto "Fruta Feia"

O projeto: Numa sociedade em que cada vez há mais pobreza e mesmo alguma fome, temos a situação irónica e triste de cerca de 30% da fruta produzida em Portugal ser desperdiçada pois, apesar de ser saborosa e de qualidade, não tem o aspecto perfeito em termos de cor, formato e calibre que a grande distribuição procura e que os consumidores escolhem.

A cooperativa Fruta Feia tem como objectivo principal canalizar essa parte da produção fruto-hortícola desperdiçada até aos consumidores que não julgam a qualidade pela aparência, combatendo uma ineficiência de mercado, criando uma marca e um movimento que consigam alterar padrões de consumo e gerar um mercado para a chamada “fruta feia”. Um mercado que gere valor e combata tanto o desperdício alimentar como o gasto desnecessário dos recursos utilizados na sua produção (água, energia e terrenos agrícolas). A Cooperativa de consumo Fruta Feia abriu a sua primeira delegação no Bairro dos Anjos (Lisboa) no passado dia 18/Novembro de 2013.
